Snow, heavy snow, started another exciting day in K. It amazes Mrs. V and myself that students in Room 149 aren't fazed by guests in the classroom, fire drills, or blizzards happening outside. After my favorite part of the day, listening to what students would like me to know, we began a very successful Modeled Writing. It's really beyond words how far we've come and how much kids are writing. Of course, I will always be thinking about tomorrow and how far we can go.
Before writing, we listened to Ben and Douglas, in the Author's Chair. Notice the picture of Author Douglas and see the hands raised to extend compliments for his writing.
After Modeled Writing, we enjoyed a great snack from Conor and then completed our monthly writing assessment. Today we wrote about either George Washington or Abe Lincoln. Most students completed three to four sentences on things they know about these great men. On Thursday, I will be evaluating their writing with my kindergarten team.
Due to the blizzard out side and cold temperatures, recess took place indoors. Another wonderful time for us to see students creating, building, computing, mixing and measuring, playing in the kitchen. Mrs. V grabbed the camera and captured the moment.
After recess, we ventured off to the computer lab to explore Sammy's Science House. Making weather, movies and exploring the sorting jar were highlights using this software. Edmark makes amazing learning software! Let me know if you're interested for your home computer.
We welcomed a special guest for Math Workshop, Mrs. Clarke. We explored sorting and defined the reasons why we sorted. Students came up with very creative sorting ideas.
Our day ended listening to a police officer sharing safety tips. Ask to listen to the special safety song, it's a real treat!
Planning has begun for the Taste of Green. We'll spend March 17, celebrating St. Patrick's Day and all that's green. Yum!
Just got word that Diana's Aunt Helen will be joining us in the classroom on Thursday. More support during Modeled Writing is such a wonderful thing, family in the classroom is even better! Tuesday is open for support, any one?
Have a great night!
Well! Now I (think) I know why Priya was singing me that "safety...seat belt...click it" song last night! Did she tell the class that she has an Uncle (Uncle Scott) who is a police officer in NJ? He is visiting us this weekend. Mr. Riley, I think Priya would be interested in the Sammy's Science software - she loves spending time on the computer. Thank you for encouraging the students to visit the learning links.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for letting me visit your class today. I had a wonderful time. I was thrilled to sit in the very same author's chair that I have seen on the BLOG! You were good listeners when I was telling you about my beach adventure with Diana. I have been in a lot of classrooms-YOURS is so full of caring and responsible people. You are really going to be marvelous first graders one day! Thank you for the great day and for sharing your books and singing with me! Enjoy your day with Mr. Riley and Ms.V!
Love,
Diana's Aunt Helen

It is so exciting to see what the children are learning. Melia is not only drawing fabulous pictures of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, but reminding me about Washington's Cherry tree and Lincoln's log cabin. It is wonderful that she is wanting to learn more about these Presidents. Congratulations to all the molecules for your interest in learning about American history. It is also neat that the children are getting an introduction to other special days on our calendar, though I missed whatever we did for African American History Month. This has been and continues to be an interesting and very educational kindergarten experience. I am proud of you all.
