Molecules, Family and Friends!

I am thankful for so much!

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Molecules and their family!  I am spending this weekend with close family and lots of food.  Andrew arrived yesterday, during our little snow storm, and today he enjoyed at least three naps throughout the day. We just finished our feast with his mother and brother from Seattle. Since Ann and I cooked, the brothers are cleaning.  I could nap, but blogging sounded better.

Our Thanksgiving Celebration was filled with great times for everyone.  I've heard from many of you and I am pleased that you enjoyed your time with us and much as I did. Thank you for all the wonderful compliments extended to the Molecules.  The Friendship Soup did the trick!  Afterward, I could hear one Molecule say, "the soup worked, I want to be a good friend!" Our week ended with Math Day.  Molecules rotated through five classrooms, learning new math games, each with a different concept. Lots of fun here watching the them choose their next stop and exploring various math strategies.

Many times on Tuesday, we sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" to Gregory.  With lots of sadness, we said good-bye to him as he leaves Room 149.  Gregory will be attending Ashlawn Elemenary in Arlington.  He was a great friend filled with throughfulness, wit and humor.  How lucky we were to have him for the past three months.

Company is Coming!

Our first celebrationin the classroom is this Monday.  We'll gather together, enjoy listening to one another, do a little dance, present gifts and feast on this special day.  We are looking forward to many family and friends joining us in Room 149.  We've been getting the room ready; soup will be cooking, butter will have been made and applesauce will be cooling. Oh, I am so thankful for so much.

Our Molecules of the Week shinned today. Gregory and Haley shared special items that mean a lot.  Haley invited her mom to read one of her favorite books. What a treat!

Sharing in the Author's Chair was Ben and Monique.  It makes us all so special when compliments are shared.  The Molecules do that well! Thank you to the parent editors that are with us during Modeled Writing.  We're better writers because of you.

On Friday, Molecules will visit each K classroom and participate in an activity about the past. In Room 149 well make butter like the pioneers did long ago. We will enjoy this butter at our Thanksgiving Celebration. (Thank you parent volunteer for joining us!)

Celebrating Thanks!

Visits from Dad, colds, and travels to the west....  too many reasons for not blogging.  Well, two weeks later, here's what's happening in the life of K!

Each week, two special students will be Molecule of the Week and they will share item in their life that make them special. Click here for the schedule. Molecules are asked to include their favorite book and even invite a special person to read it to all of us. Last week Ben invited Madeline to read, Don't Let the Pigeons Drive the Bus.

 

We're so lucky in Room 149, we celebrate each other as writers everyday! Today, during Modeled Writing, Molecules watched me write a list of the people I visited in Seattle.  They were invited to return to their journal and write their own list. Sharing in the Author's Chair was Gregory, Lily, Alex and Monique.

Our trip to Claude Moore Farm is a day my father will never forget.  The weather was perfect, student behavior, as usual, was excellent, and the animals were out. Click here for photos.

 

This week in Math Workshop we'll finish up patterns and begin exploring number sense. We'll look at ways to count, adding, subtracting, counting by 2's and 5's and writing numbers.

In Social Studies we've had many discussions about life today and long ago.  We looked at pictures of how schools looked in the past and the tools that students used to use in the classroom. This week we explore the life of Pocahontas, the Pilgrims and their journey to the new world.  We'll also finish up with looking at "needs and wants".  In science we're learning about farm animals.

Our Thanksgiving Celebration on Monday is around the corner.  Our room parents are planning the feast and the Molecules are planning the entertainment and gifts. An international flair is very welcome for this Thanksgiving Celebration.

Room 149 Rocks!

I had no voice today and tonight the head is pounding; I am off to bed. But first a quick blog, before the cold medicine kicks in to gear.  My dad arrives tomorrow and he'll be joining us to Claude Moore Farm;  I need my energy for him!

Huge thanks to all the parents that came to the Halloween Party. I have to say it again..  your support in our classroom makes such a difference in the lives of these young learners. Wow! THANK YOU!!  How much fun can a person have in one day? The Cowardly Lion wasn't able to take many photos...so thanks for sending the pictures you took. Click here for some great shots.
